The laws governing taxation in South Africa are complex at the best of times.
COVID-19 and the tax (and other) relief measures introduced are an attempt to limit the damage to our economy of this pandemic. Many of these relief measures were first introduced in March 2020. Our President‘s message last evening and his revision of the lockdown from Level 5 to Level 4 has hopefully brought some stability to the relief measures that are being offered.
Please find what we hope will be for you an easily understood list of the COVID-19 tax relief measures available to South African taxpayers.
It is important to note that:
• Applying for tax relief does not guarantee success;
• If your application is successful, there is no guarantee that the amount applied for will in fact be the amount granted;
• Certain applications for relief measures have been oversubscribed; and
• The legislation for tax relief refers to “qualifying taxpayers”. This means that the applicant must be “tax compliant” across all tax types i.e. he/she must have filed all tax returns and paid all tax debts. Taxpayers must rectify their tax compliance before submitting any application for tax relief to SARS.
